Its selfless only because the premise is that to love is to not care about yourself. Hence causing the pain. And its a juxtaposition to what you mentioned- possesivenes. Like its ironical that people justify all this (revenge, etc) by saying that they selflessly care about someone else. That they do it because they love the very thing or person they are destroying.
